CHATTAHOOCHEE TRAIL

This two-mile (round trip) trail traverses three natural communities typical of Georgia’s coastal plain. A second-growth pine-oak forest covers the uplands. The trail crosses a wetland surrounding a sinkhole depression, and then ascends a dry sand ridge with a dwarf oak forest. As you walk along the trail look for changes in the forest, as well as clues from prior human activities.

LAKE LOOP

This mile-long trail traverses two natural communities along Lake Walter F. George. The lake edge is a complex of wetlands and small ponds with plant and animal species well adapted to the wet conditions. A drier oak-hickory forest ascends the hillside. Both communities are still adjusting to the lake which flooded the Chattahoochee River valley almost half a century ago. Look for signs of these changes as you walk along the trail.
