Welcome to the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex home page on the World Wide Web. Check here for current news and updates. The complex consists of four refuges located in southern Nevada: Desert National Wildlife Refuge, Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge, and the Amargosa Pupfish Station. A wide array of additional information is available to help you learn more about these refuges, their natural resources, and recreational opportunities.
History of the Area
The Desert National Wildlife Refuge was established May 20, 1936, and encompasses 1.5 million acres of the diverse Mojave Desert in southern Nevada. It is the largest National Wildlife Refuge in the lower 48 states. The Refuge contains six major mountain ranges, the highest rising from 2,500-foot valleys to nearly 10,000 feet. Annual rainfall ranges from less than four inches on the valley floors to over fifteen inches on the highest peaks.

September 18 Nice place to get away from it all. by vegasdesertfox
Over Labor Day weekend 2009(Sept) we drove up to the north entrance and came in that way. It took us 2 hours to travel a little over 17 miles so four-wheel drive is strongly recommended. We camped(dispersed) for free at Desert Pass. There are three vault toilets and enough campsites(firering, table, & tentpad for three individual families. We brought our own wood but found out that we arrived that fire restrictions were in place until Oct 1st so we had no campfire and only used our propane stove that we brought for cooking. It was a very nice escape from Las Vegas and we really felt alone and forgotten! Driving out we came across eight other jeeps & trucks heading up on Labor Day. The road is only a two-track and really not enough room to allow travel both ways. The road, Mormon Well Road is not a one-way affair but most people treat it that way. But we really enjoy the solitude once we leave the back-top highways. And just looking for a free place to camp where it is cool during the hot summer months, Desert Pass along the Mormon Well Road is always a pleasureable trip. Bumpy but nice!
September 4 A relaxing day or adventurous trip by Briman
I really enjoy visiting this area. Corn Creek is an oasis in the desert that provides a nice walk and plenty of wildlife. There is also a picnic area right up the rode that is shaded and perfect for a gathering of friends and family. Any vehicle can reach this area. If you are more adventurous, there are numerous rodes leading up into the mountains with campsites and a picnic area. Four wheel drive is strongly recommended for this part. A lot of wildlife and beautiful scenery.
